Monterey to Cambria

Cambria, CA
Today was a short drive with lots to see. Highway 1 along here is very curvy with steep cliffs, so it was slow going, but worthwhile. We started the morning with chilly fog, but it cleared quickly as we went south.
We made various stops along the way. Some stops were at formal sites while many were just along the side of the road. We managed to see whales during 2 of our roadside stops. We were always on the lookout for sea otters and managed to find quite a few. None were very close to shore, unfortunately.
Our first real stop was at Point Lobos State Park. We walked on multiple trails and found 11 otters. We spent most of the morning here and had a picnic lunch. Well worth the visit.
We also stopped at the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to see the McWay waterfall which falls on to the beach. The cove there is beautiful! There are a few trails to walk on as well.
Shortly before we made it to our stopping point in Cambria we stopped at the Piedras Blancas Beach to see the elephant seals. The beach was cluttered with the huge animals, most of which were napping. A few of the males were fighting and a couple of clearly juvenile males decided to copy the older guys.
We finished the day in Cambria, our room facing the beach (and just across the street from the water).
