Road to Hana

We moved islands again. We got up quite early and flew from the big island to Maui (via Oahu). We got our car and hit the road…the road to Hana.

The Hana Highway, known to tourists like us as the road to Hana, is a very scenic drive on Maui. It is also known for being a very narrow and curvy drive. There are 620 curves and 59, bridges, 46 of which are one-lane. The area is very lush and there are multiple waterfalls along the way.

Right before the start of the road to Hana, we stopped at the Hookipa Beach. We were hoping to spot some Hawaiian monk seals. No luck there, but there were a ton of turtles sunning themselves.

There were at least 25 turtles on this section of the beach…almost all in this picture.

We made a number of stops on our drive today. Some were just scenic lookouts, others were for short walks.

Ke’anae Peninsula

Ching’s pond/blue sapphire pools. The waterfall is directly under a bridge of the road to Hana.

The water in the pool below the falls above was super clear.

Waikani falls/3 bears falls: these were my favorite falls of the day and this picture does not do them justice.

This is a lava tube. It is on the side of the road and opens up into a cave. We went into it part way. If you go all the way to the back, it apparently opens out the end.
Yes. The town of Haiku.

We made it to Hana, then turned around and drove all the twists and turns again. Still beautiful!
