Portal Point, Antarctica

Today we finally landed on the actual Antarctic continent rather than an Antarctic island. We landed on Portal Point on the Reclus Peninsula.

Before we went out the crew got everything out and ready for all of the excursions.

This is one of the submarines. There are 2 that can take 6 people down at a time.

A couple of the zodiacs and a special operations boat used for scenic excursions.

Zodiacs and kayaks.

View from Portal Point across the bay to another portion of mainland.

South Polar Skua: These birds eat penguin eggs and chicks.

Walking up to the top.

Icebergs

Antarctic Shags flying by.

Weddel seal in the distance.

Us up at the top.

There were so many humpback whales around that we lost track of how many we saw.

We also saw many more when we went out on one of the special operations boats.

View of our landing site at Portal Point.

The whole landing site.

The clouds blend into the mountain snow.

Interesting ice.
