Klaserie Game Reserve, South Africa Day 1

Today was our first full day at the Klaserie Game Reserve.

Last night there were lions roaring for much of the night

We started out with some early morning impala.

Impala with a fork-tailed drongo. These birds often trail impala and other animals so that they can eat the insects that are displaced from the grasses as the impala walk through them.

We spent much of the morning looking for rhinos without success.

We found a juvenile male and female lion and followed them into the bush where they decided to rest in the morning sun.

We also spent a while with an elephant family that was foraging. I’m not sure they were very excited by our presence, but they tolerated us.

I managed to get some pictures of a steenbok pair.

These small antelope get to 16-20 in tall and are very quick to run away. This pair, however, stayed around for a bit when we stopped to see them.

We did also see 2 genet, which are small cat/ferret like animals, but they both quickly ran away.

The sunset ended up being quite stunning.
