This morning we made it to Hungary. We started out with an early morning visit from passport control as we crossed the border. Seriously. We had to get up at 6:30 so that they could see our pretty faces with our matching passports as we were passing into the EU. We then got breakfast and some more sailing on to our destination.

We ported at Mohács, which is small Hungarian town on the Danube. From there we drove to Pécs. Originally, this was the city Sopianae which was founded by Romans at the beginning of the 2nd century. The name possibly comes from the plural of the Celtic sop meaning “marsh”. By the 4th century it became a significant early Christian center. There is a Christian necropolis that has been excavated and includes a gravesite with frescoes. We visited the Cathedral of Sts Peter and Paul. The foundation of the cathedral is from 4th century Roman times with the cathedral built in the Middle Ages and restored after damage in the 17th century. We also visited a very interesting Catholic Church which was, in the 16th-17th centuries, a mosque. It is known as the Mosque of Pasha Qasim and has aspects of both a Catholic Church and a mosque. The town is quaint and we had a nice time walking around.
