Guayaquil

Today is a travel day to get us on our way towards the Galapagos Islands. We started off in Cusco, flew to Lima, and then ended up in Guayaquil, Ecuador for the night. We will fly to the Galapagos in the morning. We did end up with part of the afternoon in Guayaquil, so we ventured out around our hotel for a little while. Guayaquil is the 2nd largest city in Ecuador and is the main port city.

Right by our hotel, as in nearly attached to it, is the Metropolitan Cathedral of Guayaquil (Saint Peter Cathedral). The original cathedral was built in 1547 but burned down. It was replaced with the current Neo-Gothic building which was built from 1924-1937.

Across the street from the cathedral is the Seminario Park, also known as the Iguana Park. There are dozens of iguanas living there. Since they are used to having people around all of the time they are very calm and friendly, we even saw one climb onto someone’s lap!

Outside of that, we grabbed some food and sat by the hotel pool for a bit. This trip is fun, but isn’t leaving us much relaxation time.
