Metz Christmas Markets

We took a train from Paris to Metz, France today. Metz is in northeast France near the junction of France, Germany, and Luxembourg. The Christmas markets here are reportedly the 2nd oldest in France.

We arrived around lunchtime. It was rainy, so not great for walking around outside or for pictures. Didn’t stop us, though.

Metz has multiple markets. A couple are just food and the rest are mixed food and items for sale. There is a ferris wheel, an ice rink, and some carnival rides.

Think Disney’s Dumbo ride but you’re a Christmas ornament instead of an elephant.
I am hoping that using crates to decorate trees does not catch on. They had a bunch of trees like this!

Metz has a cathedral that dates back to the 13th century. It has the 3rd highest nave in France at 135.9 feet, which is quite noticeable when inside. It has the largest area of stained glass in the world at 69,920 sq ft, some of it dating back to the 13th century, although some is completely modern, from the 1950s.

The town is decorated with lights, which was quite pretty after dark.

The ferris wheel changes colors over time.
Different streets have different decoration themes.
The cathedral next to the ferris wheel is quite the juxtaposition.
This is the view from our hotel room.
