Strasbourg Christmas Markets

Once again we got on a train this morning and relocated, this time from Metz to Strasbourg, France. We are now right on the NE border of France with Germany in the Alsace region of France.

Strasbourg is one of the 4 capitals of the European Union (the other 3 are Brussels, Luxembourg, and Frankfurt). It is on the River Ill and has a quaint old Petite France district along the river with half timbered houses.

Strasbourg has been dubbed the Capital of Christmas as it is famous for its Christmas Markets. It reportedly has the oldest Christmas Markets in France, dating back to 1570. There are multiple markets spread out around the city center and much of the area is decorated for Christmas.

It was another rainy day, but lots of people were out and about. We made it to many, but not quite all of the markets.

Place Kléber Market
The Place Kléber Market tree is always quite large. This year’s tree is 98 feet tall. It took 3 weeks and 2 40 foot cherry pickers for 2 climbers, 12 electricians, and 8 landscape designers to decorate it.
Food! (but not crepes or waffles like the sign says)

We also went into the Strasbourg Cathedral. It was built from 1015-1439 and is the tallest structure that was built entirely in the middle ages at 466 ft. It turns out that they were conducting a funeral when we were in there (they did not close it to the public during this and lots of people were walking about), which limited my picture taking.

Once it got dark, we headed out again to enjoy the lights.
