Klaserie Game Reserve Day 2, South Africa

This morning was very cloudy and a bit foggy, which seemed to drive down the animal activity.

We found both male and female leopard tracks early on, which got us excited and we spent much of our time and efforts on finding one of them.

This is a male leopard print. The female leopard prints have a palm pad that is shallower and most female prints are smaller, although there can, of course, be young male leopards with smaller feet. Lion prints have a different angle of the palm pad to the toes. Basically, if you draw a line along the edge of the palm pads and it goes between the toes it is a leopard and if it doesn’t it is a lion. At least that is my understanding of our conversation.

Tawny eagles

White helmet shrike

It gave me a bit of a look.

We found a trio of male Cape buffalo

At lunchtime the watering hole was busy.

We had a turtle and a blacksmith lapwing.

And also some young warthogs.

And a whole herd of elephants enjoying themselves.

We learned that the leopard was seen this morning, so we went out to track the leopard again, heading out first to the area where he was last seen. Unfortunately, we had no luck there, so we kept looking.

We did find some giraffes.

You don’t see me!

Twilight giraffes.

We also found this elephant who did not want its picture taken.

Unfortunately, we did not find the leopard today.
